The government heavyweight: Smart India Hackathon
SIH is the largest open innovation model in the world. Ministries and PSUs publish real problem statements — from railway signalling to crop-yield forecasting — and shortlisted teams build for 36 hours at 200+ nodal centres. Winning at SIH doesn't just get you ₹1 lakh; it usually opens doors to PSU internships and follow-up funding.
The prize-heavy independents
HackByte, HackIndia, and Hack the Mountains regularly cross ₹5L pools thanks to sponsor partnerships with Devfolio, MLH, Polygon and GitHub. The bar is higher — polished submissions, working prototypes, strong pitches — but so is the ceiling.
College-run codefests worth the flight
HackVerse (NIT Trichy), Codeutsava (NIT Raipur), Hack-A-BIT (BIT Mesra), and PEC Hackathon consistently punch above their weight. They cap participation at ~400 devs, which means denser mentorship, better swag, and a real shot at podium.
How to prep in the 2 weeks before
- Pick your team first, idea second. A 3-person team of a full-stack dev + ML/backend + designer beats a 4-person team of the same skill.
- Have a starter template ready. Auth, DB, deploy pipeline — set up on day 0 so you're shipping features by hour 6.
- Read the problem statement 3 times. Judges reward relevance more than novelty.
- Ship a working demo by hour 20. Reserve the last 10 hours for polish and pitch, not new features.
- Prep the pitch, not just the product. Most winning teams rehearse a 3-minute walkthrough at least twice.
